So how did this song end up having its lyrics changed from a greeting to a birthday song? The changed lyrics first appeared in a songbook in 1924, although its unknown who did this first. As radio and film were becoming very popular the song seemed to take a life of its own for a while and the melody was used on more than one occasion in films in the early 1900s.
Happy Birthday To You, the birthday song heard the world over, is actually protected by copyright. Quite how they manage to enforce this is beyond me for such a massive worldwide song. Apparently the birthday song brings in around $2 million a year in royalties from publishing rights (which is owned now by Summy-Birchard, a company under the AOL Time Warner umbrella who paid $25 million for the company which was then called Birch Tree and then changed to Summy-Birch).
Set up a circle of numbers on the ground and have everyone stand on a number. Begin playing festive music and have everyone walk from number to number. Draw a number from a hat and then stop the music. Whoever is standing on that number when the music stops is the winner! I have played this game at many school carnivals where the prize is a cake. But, you can give away something different.
Whatever you do to celebrate your child is birthday, do not forget to photograph or film the great event, and to put aside a pristine sample of each party invitation, hat, napkin, etc., to save in a treasure box of childhood memories. Years later when your children have grown up and are planning birthday parties for their own children, echoes of Happy Birthday to You will still be ringing in their ears.
Happy Birthday to you,
For most of these themes and party elements it is easy enough to buy ready-made party supplies, but you could make things even more special by creating everything yourself, instead. A home-baked, home-decorated birthday cake really says I love you and I made this cake just for you! Decorations and party favors made by your own kids in advance can also lend a more personal touch to the party and create additional birthday memories that your children will always cherish.
