Birthdays are celebrated as joyous occasions, from quietly given gifts, to intimate family dinners, to enormous surprise parties, to raucous all night parties in glitzy nightclubs. For children, especially, birthdays can be special occasions, and days for everyone to say We love you and we are glad that you were born. We are grateful that you are a part of our lives and we want to celebrate your special day! Its fun to make a big deal out of a child is birthday.
Something For Everyone
In 1893 Mildred was working at the Louisville Experimental Kindergarten School where her sister was also working as Principle. Mildred came up with the melody we all now associate with the happy birthday song, and sister Patty added the lyrics and so was born the song Good Morning to All, a simple and catchy song for teachers to use to welcome their students into the class room each day. It went like this:
Set up a circle of numbers on the ground and have everyone stand on a number. Begin playing festive music and have everyone walk from number to number. Draw a number from a hat and then stop the music. Whoever is standing on that number when the music stops is the winner! I have played this game at many school carnivals where the prize is a cake. But, you can give away something different.
My reality. Year after year after year, this never happens. You would think I would learn by now, but I still have not. I still go to bed thinking I will wake up and feel older, wiser, smarter... something. I never do. I guess this is where my birthday disappointment begins. To be honest, I do not recall having any excellent dreams the night before my birthdays. If I do, they have never been fulfilled. In all of my birthdays, none of them have consisted of confetti or feeling like a Queen. I know the sun comes up every day, although I can still think, on my birthday, it came up just for me. It did not choose its color, based on my opinion. I have never received flowers or balloons on my birthday, which is sheer tragic. I have longed and desired for a surprise birthday party, but that one still has only happened in my dreams. I remember all of my friends and family birthdays but very few seem to remember mine. If they do, I do not receive a phone call. I sometimes do not get to go out to dinner for my birthday. If I do, it is the usual restaurant. The only adventure I have had is thinking about the adventure I do like to have. The last spectacular event I attended on my birthday was... well, I do not remember ever having one. I have never met the man of my dreams, although I still hold out hope. It might be interesting for all of my friends to meet. Have you ever wondered how that would be for all of your friends, whom you talk about with your other friends, to meet? I have never received a toast or a letter in any capacity, although the thought is a nice one.
If you are putting together a birthday party in your home, decorate the place to the nines, with intertwined rolls of crepe paper hanging from the rafters, and with three-foot high letters spelling out Happy Birthday! stretched across the room. Decorate the party table with colorful paper plate and cups and napkins, just for the sheer cheerfulness of the things.
