In this same year the song was published in the songbook Song Stories for the Kindergarten. The song proved to be very popular and underwent some small changes to lyrics over time, though always based upon a greeting song for either teachers to students, or changed from students to teachers.
So how did this song end up having its lyrics changed from a greeting to a birthday song? The changed lyrics first appeared in a songbook in 1924, although its unknown who did this first. As radio and film were becoming very popular the song seemed to take a life of its own for a while and the melody was used on more than one occasion in films in the early 1900s.
People celebrate lots of events every year. We may celebrate religious holidays, or we may celebrate anniversaries that mark the big events in our nation is history, like the Fourth of July, or in human history, but what significance do our own birthdays have? Most of us dont change the world. Most of us do not lead noteworthy lives. We live our lives in quiet anonymity, and the world would keep on turning even if we did never been born.
Make a paper airplane for each child. Be sure and weigh down the nose (use a paper clip.) so that the plane will fly straight. Put each childs name on a plane. Have the children line up across a wall. Tell them to throw their planes when you count to three. The child that tosses their plane the farthest wins the game.
Make it festive! Make it colourful! Make it bright! Three hundred and sixty-four days of the year we can teach our kids to be well-mannered , to get along with others, to share, and we teach them to accept being treated just like everyone else by the world at large, with no special privileges. On that three hundred and sixty-fifth day, however, break all the rules. Sure, children must still be polite and cooperative on that day, too, but let them know that they really are special, and that birthdays are special holidays just for them alone, celebrations of their births, and theirs alone!
I have never gone to bed on my birthday night exhausted, but in past years, I have gone to my bed disappointed. I am sure now you can understand why. It is not like my expectations of my birthday are that high, right? I mean, do not fairy godmothers come to you and make your fantasies come true? I know many people are wondering, like me, where their fairy godmother is... especially on a day when it is your special day. I am still waiting for her to arrive... and when she does, my most excellent dreams will be my fabulous reality. This year seems like a good year. Then again, does that mean she will only come once in a lifetime or can she come once a year? After all, it is my birthday, Im allowed to be a little selfish.
